The houseboat project offers a simple design solution to a complex series of challenges. The footprint of the existing houseboat had to be maintained and there are stringent height restrictions so space was limited. Privacy was also of great concern as neighbors are just several feet away and curious tourists peer in the windows from kayaks and tour boats. The structure is defined by two main volumes. The first containing the living and dining areas which have a high ceiling to bring light and views deep into the house. The second volume consists of two levels with the kitchen open to the living dining area and two bedrooms with a common bath and a storage/laundry area. The upper level contains a master suite with a walk in closet and sitting area which opens onto a deck over the living area so that it is raised for privacy. A glass "void" between the volumes contains the entry and stairs while bringing light into the house.
